MySpace New Zealand has done a “census” of its users to show what MySpace would be like if it were a country. With over 129 million users globally (half a million in New Zealand) if MySpace was a country it would be the 11th largest in the world. With questions on a wide range of topics the census showed some interesting facts about the views of its users.
Citizens of the MySpace country would support a 30 hour work week, based on four six hour days, 31% of MySpace citizens would vote Green (more than three times the vote the New Zealand Green Party got last election) and 9% would vote Socialist. MySpace would be a secular state, as voted by 80% of citizens, the most popular religion would be Christianity (33%), less than in New Zealand, Atheists would make up 15% of the population and 13% would be Jedi- a religion that has been written in in the New Zealand census as a joke.
Marijuana would be legal and the elected Head of State, with 27% of all votes, would be Barack Obama, in second place with 11% was the fictional character Robin Hood. While that and some other statistics revealed by the census are obviously joke answers, others show the way MySpace users in New Zealand- meaning mainly young people with Internet access, think about social and environmental issues.
This wasn’t what MySpace was interested in however, they also questioned their users on their favourite beer brand, soft drink brand and deodorant brand. This kind of data is valuable to marketers, but not really to anyone else. If MySpace really was a country, we’d see what the world would be like with a country centered around advertising to its citizens.
